Avelo Airlines is ending its deal with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to carry out deportation flights.
The airline will close its base in Mesa, Arizona, where the flights take place, and conclude its participation in the DHS charter program Jan. 27, Avelo spokesperson Courtney Goff confirmed with Delaware Online/The News Journal on Jan. 7.
"The program provided short-term benefits but ultimately did not deliver enough consistent and predictable revenue to overcome its operational complexity and costs," Goff said in an email.
Avelo, Delaware’s only commercial airline, announced in April 2025 that it would begin flying deportation charters, a move that sparked protests across the country, including numerous demonstrations outside Wilmington Airport.
