Despite a disappointing outcome in the presidential election, Delaware continued its tradition of progressive governance by electing and reelecting Democrats at all state levels. In addition to the candidates listed below, Delawareans elected Matt Meyer as Governor and Kyle Evans Gay as Lieutenant Governor, and reelected Trinidad Navarro as Insurance Commissioner. Delaware is blue!
Lisa Blunt Rochester (LBR) was elected to fill the US Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Tom Carper, having previously hheld Delaware’s sole seat in the US House of Representatives. The great-great-granddaughter of slaves, LBR will represent this former slave state and join Maryland’s Angela Alsobrooks as one of two female African American Senators, another Senate first.
Sarah McBride will also make history as the first openly transgender member of Congress, filling the House seat being vacated by LBR. A member of the Delaware State Senate since 2021, McBride has dedicated her private and public career to the protection and expansion of the civil and human rights of all people.
Russ Huxtable was reelected as State Senator from the 6th District. Since assuming the office in 2022, Huxtable has been a highly effective and dedicated public servant, authoring and sponsoring several bills to improve housing access and availability in Delaware.
Stell Parker Selby retained her position representing the 20th Representative District. A native of Southern Delaware and a former educator, school board president, and board member of several social welfare organizations, Stell flipped the seat from red to blue in 2022.
Claire Snyder-Hall kept the 14th Representative District seat blue, winning the contest to replace the retiring Pete Schwartzkopf. Claire was previously the director of Common Cause Delaware and taught political Science at George Mason University.
Jane Gruenebaum won the election for District 3 of the Sussex County Council, defeating the incumbent and bringing a more balanced and environmentally sound mindset to a body that had long been dominated by developer-friendly members. Jane is a former Executive Director of the League of Women Voters and the cofounder and past president of the Sussex Preservation Coalition.
